Term 1
CLASS NEWS
Week 7
The children have all settled into routines very well and
are enjoying having two teachers. During literacy we have been writing recounts,
poetry and narratives. They are all focused and improving during reading groups.
Thank you to all the mums and grandmothers who have been helping us during this
time. We have been getting very good results in spelling BUT the children have
set a goal to see if they can all get 10 out of 10 in their test before the end
of the term. I am sure they will achieve this goal if they put their minds to
it! Maths this term has been very interesting, as we have been using the
interactive whiteboard in the library, as well as our plasma TV. The children
are definitely enjoying the interactive activities; they are much more engaged,
and maths is now an exciting part of the day. Our HSIE and Science units are
‘Living Things’ and ‘Wet and Dry Environments’ and we have been doing a lot of
exciting things for this as well. We now know what plants and animals need to
survive, and have adopted some fish to care for (thanks to the Parker family for
this), and are looking after them well. CAPA units are also an exciting part of
our school week, we have been doing a dance unit based on the theme ‘water’ and
have also been visiting the San Francisco Symphony website (www.sfskids.com)
and have discovered some budding musicians in our
midst!

Welcome back to
another exciting term. 1/2 finished Term 1 on a high, with our excursion to the
Wetlands Centre. All the children had a great day, learning lots about the
animals we discovered at the centre. This certainly was an excellent venue to
visit to finish the units we studied last term.
We also welcomed
Miss Boyle to our class, and have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know her. We are
waiting anxiously for the arrival of baby Ellis, and can’t wait to find out if
it is a boy or a girl, and also for him or her to visit us as soon as Mrs Ellis
is up to it.
We have been very
busy this term learning lots about the ‘olden days’ in our HSIE unit ‘The Way We
Were’, and have been studying old fashioned toys in library/computer with Mrs
Neal. This will be a great lead in to our Science and Technology unit, ‘Toy
World’ in which we will learn all about the way toys move.
The children have
also continued to improve in English and Mathematics, and it always amazes me at
how they are all so willing and eager to learn new things. I am certainly
looking forward to another productive term with
them.

We have had a few of birthdays
this year.... there's always something exciting happening in our room!
For our assembly we sang a song from 'Toy Story'.

And we loved having some of our
parents in for Education Week...

Welcome back to
school and to what promises to be another busy term. Year 1/2 is having an
exciting year so far.
Last term we
completed our HSIE unit of work called, ‘The way we were’ and our Science and
Technology unit, ‘Toy world’. We presented a fabulous item to the song ‘You’ve
got a friend in me’ at our assembly. This term we look forward to our HSIE unit,
‘Transport’ and our Science and Technology unit, ‘Look around you’.
We are looking
forward to book week coming up in week 5, where we will be studying one of the
short listed books in detail. Last term we enjoyed reading a novel about “Junie
B Jones”. We found her to be a funny young girl, not knowing what she is going
to do next! We look forward to reading more of her stories this term.
We will be sending
home spelling lists from next week in order to prepare for our school “Spelling
Bee”. These lists will revise all the spelling rules learned this year and we
would like the children to practice their words at home as they will be tested
each Friday for the next four weeks. From this, finalists will be chosen to
enter the Spelling Bee in week 6. Jane

Year 1/2 children
have had such a busy term, as always. Their HISE unit work has been full of
interesting learning about transport, with some fantastic projects being done by
the Year 2 children. We are now learning about the scientific aspects of
vehicles in the science unit ‘Getting About’, and the children have come up with
some great ideas for the ‘design and make a land vehicle’ component of the
unit. The children are all progressing well in literacy, they have all improved
in reading this term, and I love popping in during the morning session and
seeing what they are doing. They are always very excited to show me what they
know about nouns, verbs and adjectives complete with actions from the Jolly
Grammar program. Maths is always an exciting time in our room. The children
usually cheer when it is time to turn on the big screen to see what we are
learning about each day. Their enthusiasm is great to see. Thank you to those
parents who have been able to encourage extra maths time at home with the use of
the ‘smartkiddies’ website activities. If you are having troubles with the login
(username:Fuiono/password:12) please let me know, and I will see if I can help.
I hope you all have a fantastic holiday and enjoy the break.
