Year 6 has eagerly begun the 2009 school year taking on
the roles and responsibility of the senior class in the school. At our recent
House meetings many of the students were selected as House Captains. Along with
our school captains: Jackson and Josie, Hayden and Emma, they will be inducted
into their positions at a special assembly on Thursday 5th February ready to
lead and to support their sporting house at the school swimming carnival
scheduled for Friday 6th February.
In class we will be studying aspects of our Australian
identity as part of HSIE, and looking at the role that different food substances
play in our diet, the ways that food is produced, preserved and packaged as part
of our Science unit “Food for the Tuckerbox”.
Literacy homework will begin this week with maths
homework starting next week. Homework will be set for each week throughout the
year, excluding the final week of each term.
At the moment I am organizing quotes for the Sydney
Excursion but you might like to mark the dates November 24th to 26th on your
calendar and look out for a note in the next few weeks regarding costs and
arrangements.
I look forward to a great year with your child.

Week 10
Term One is nearly
at an end but Year 6 continues to work hard. Throughout the term we have studied
various aspects of Australian culture and identity, learning much about our
multi-cultural society and the groups which have contributed towards making our
unique nation. We have researched famous Australians such as Mum “Shirl “Smith,
Fred Hollows and Sir Donald Bradman.
We have written
recounts and information reports, and currently working on description-writing.
Our work in
Science has taught us much about the need for a healthy diet, and the role that
nutrients such as carbohydrates, iron and calcium play in building strong
bodies.
We are learning
about the need for fitness in PD/H/PE sessions, part of which involves us
“running to Sydney”. Each Monday we all run 1 kilometre. This equates to 10km
towards our journey. We have only 270 km to go before we reach our goal!
On the subject of
Sydney, notes have gone home to invite Year 5 and 6 students to participate in
our excursion at the end of November. These notes, accompanied by the deposit,
are due back in by the end of the term.
Although the
holidays are two weeks away, there is still much to be done: sport to be played,
the subject of ANZAC Day to be researched and work to be completed.
Thank you to all
parents who have helped us this term, from adults who have come in to hear us
read, to those who have cooked for our cake
stall.

Week 7
This term Year 6 has been learning
about Antarctica, the frozen continent. Research has been conducted on the
first brave explorers of that dangerous land. The students have also been very
busy with preparing and presenting their talks for Public Speaking. Many
entertaining and interesting topics were presented with style and enthusiasm. A
number of students experienced a day at Muswellbrook High School in an
orientation visit held this term. It was interesting to gain an insight into
some of the various subjects on offer. A number of students are excited about
the upcoming Starstruck performance and have spent many hours rehearsing during
and after school. We wish them well at the concerts. Year 6 has also been
participating in Milo sport and a number of students from our class have
traveled away to represent the school for sports this term.

Parliament and the role of elected and non-elected members.
All students have
presented a discussion paper via email this week and the quality of the work is
very high. The topic for this activity has been the Emily Rodda novel “The

Week 2
Year 6 has
commenced their final term in Primary School and all students are excited about
the transition to High School in 2010. To prepare students for language studies
next year, Mrs Bailey from Muswellbrook High School is teaching Japanese lessons
for the first five weeks of term. Each student has a Japanese name tag to
assist with their development of the language. At the completion of the five
week course students will have a solid foundation in Japanese.
During Week 6,
Year 6 along with Year 5 will travel to Sydney for their final primary school
excursion. The program for this week is comprehensive and students are very
excited. They will explore The Rocks, and Darling Harbour; visit the IMAX
Theatre, the Police Museum and Circular Quay on day one. Day two includes
visits to Taronga Zoo and enjoying a ferry ride back to Circular Quay for a
guided tour of the Opera House. This will be followed by a trip to Bondi Beach

As you can see
this is a comprehensive and busy week. Accommodation is at the Naamaroo Centre
near the Lane Cove River Park. All students are anticipating a great time away
from home.
Ms Lynette from
Goalball NSW is conducting Year 6 sport for five weeks. Goalball is played
using a belled ball and blindfolds. It is an ideal sport for Holly and her Year
6 peers. The activities are highly structured and all students enjoy
participating. Holly commented, “I love this sport. Everyone is blindfolded.
It’s a level playing field.”
Mr Bryant and Mr
McNamara are both very proud of the Year 6 achievements this year. There are
outstanding academic results as well as excellence in sport and the arts.
Students have demonstrated a high regard for each other, respect for all and
caring attitudes.
Clearly these
students have done Denman Public School proud and we congratulate them all for
the excellent outcomes they have
achieved. Tony
